Eating healthy food is good for health and should be a priority when it comes to diets. However, there can be side effects including bloating.

Dr Rupy Aujila, founder of The Doctor’s Kitchen, told Express.co.uk bloating can be caused by attempting to eat better.

“Unfortunately, a lot of healthier ingredients can be indicated as a cause of bloating, particularly if you’re transitioning from a low fibre diet to a high fibre diet,” the health professional said.

Rupy, who details healthy recipes online and also runs The Doctor’s Kitchen podcast, said: “Everyone’s getting involved in gut health these days trying to improve their diet, eating more a plant-focused diet, which is great.

“But as you do that, your gut microbes are going to change in terms of their population and how they respond to different foods.”

Dr Rupy recently recommended bloating combined with symptoms is cause to book a GP appointment as soon as possible, as bloating can be a sign of something more sinister. 

Once your bloating has been cleared as a sign of something more dangerous, there are foods that could be causing the uncomfortable swelling.

“High fibre items like lentils, beans, pulses, brassica, vegetables, and those sulphurous vegetables like kale, Brussels sprouts, can be gas producing and cause bloating,” Dr Rupy explained.

Dr Rupy said: “Well, I tell people to transition their diagnosis.

“It’s best to go slow and to be mindful of these changes.

“It takes everyone a different amount of time to change, it can take as little as a few days or a few weeks for your gut microbe population to quite drastically change to the point where it’s more suited to consuming those foods.

“So, as healthy as they are and as much as I advise them, you know, be careful if you are eating those kinds of foods.”

Probiotic foods can also cause bloating the professional said.

“The same thing can be said of probiotic foods, so things like kimchi sauerkraut, even cactus,” he explained.

“If you’re not used to having them every day it’s something you probably want to transition to quite slowly.”

Any extreme changes to your diet should be discussed with your GP.

What is bloating?

Bloating is when the foods you are eating produce gas in your stomach.

It causes the stomach to become swollen and enlarged.

Some increase in the size of your middle after eating is perfectly normal, however, if it is painful and symptoms are persistent see a doctor.
