Breaded, deep-fried and just not a whole grain: So, to summarise: what restaurateurs as a children’s court on their menus.

A Team led by Sven Schneider of Heidelberg University has evaluated 1877 children’s meals, 500 dining cards to owner-operated Restaurants. Their conclusion is devastating. Around four out of five investigated food be from a nutritional point of view, bad for the body, said Sven Schneider of Heidelberg University, the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sunday newspaper” (“FAS”). The investigation has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed magazine.

Too much fat, too many calories

Most of the children’s meals contained too much fat and calories, low in nutrients and often red meat, Schneider said the “FAS”. 54 percent of the surveyed food included French fries, whole-grain products were not a single Time.

The researchers assessed the quality of the dishes, among other things, according to the quality standards of the German nutrition society (DGE) for lunch in day-care centres and schools. In addition, they divided the courts according to an internationally used rating system – here the German children’s dishes fared worse than the corresponding offerings at Fast-Food chains in North America. There you can order the Junior bag with water, salad, or Apple, Schneider.

Hardly any variation on the children’s menu

Around a quarter of the tested food met not a single one of the eleven DGE-criteria. In addition, there is too little variety. 70 percent of all children’s dishes are always the same, unhealthy food are:

  • Schnitzel with French fries,
  • Chicken Nuggets,
  • Sausages with French fries,
  • Burger,
  • Fries with Ketchup or Mayonnaise,
  • The pasta with the sauce.

The best rating there was for Spaghetti with tomato sauce, Schneider said the “FAS” – “because you can rate a tomato sauce with a lot of good will, even as a vegetable”.

The Federal food Minister, Julia Klöckner (CDU) announced on Twitter, the results of the study are part of the reason, to meet with representatives of Restaurants and pubs.
