Also, it makes even the beginners use it since it requires almost the entire body to work.  As suppose to focusing on one part alone. In the case of the treadmill, long-term use can cause more issues on the user.  Especially on the knees, ankles and other parts of the lower body. Starting with a treadmill requires you to start slowly. You can then proceed to a more difficult level once your lower body becomes used to it.

    As a personal trainer, I find both are beneficial. The best one is the one my client will use! I have some clients that don’t like the treadmill because it hurts their knees and some that don’t like the elliptical because it hurts their hip. Sometimes these are excuses, but either way, they have to use it for it to work!

    At one point I was an avid runner and used to use the treadmill as much as I could. I was never one for running a track or around the block, rather preferred watching sportscenter while I ran on the treadmill. Overtime I had to switch to ellipticals due to severe knee problems. it took some getting used to but ultimately allowed me to continue my normal cardio for the week.

      You are a great example of what the two machines can do for you. The treadmill offers runners the ability to run and get a great cardio workout. The Elliptical trainer comes in handy when you have joint issues. Two great machines, with different benefits.

    I haven’t used the elliptical too much, I think it’s because it’s easier to just run on the treadmill. I did use treadmill to warm up earlier, but I had some knee problems, and I figured it wasn’t the best idea to use the treadmill. The elliptical might be better for my knees, also the fact that you use your upper body more with the elliptical makes it more beneficial.

      Yes you are correct, elliptical trainers can work your whole body. Especially your arms, from the constant moving.

    I’ve never been a fan of either…I’m far too uncoordinated! I always make the joke that that’s why I run: I have no coordination! Haha! But the times when I’ve had to choose, I go for the treadmill strictly because the elliptical has always felt sort of awkward. For a while I had the mindset that the elliptical was “too easy” for a workout…until I tried one for longer than the 2 minutes I would normally do. I was very surprised that once I got the gist of the motion it felt like my hamstrings were being worked more than when I use the treadmill. I’m not sure if that’s normal, but I do have a more respectful view of the elliptical now!

      Thanks for your honest input, and I totally agree that the treadmill is less dreadful of the two machines. Elliptical machines are great exercise products. Yes, they can overwork your lower body very well. So there are benefits to both. It depends on your needs and preference. Cheers!

    Personally, I prefer ellipticals over treadmills because they are so much easier on my joints. The constant movement on my feet hurt my knees a lot. I guess there is no real way around saving your joints when running, though. I got running shoes, and take fish oil. But, still, I prefer the elliptical.

    Any advice?

      Hi Garen,
      The elliptical can burn more calories than a treadmill, in addition to working more of your body. For example, your arms are constantly moving when you are using the elliptical trainer. In your case, if you have joint pain, that’s where the elliptical trainer has a big advantage because it’s low impact. With that said, some people still prefer a treadmill because they love to run.
